Welcome to Our East Row Garden
In the heart of Newport, Kentucky, within the vibrant urban core we all share, we're often asked: What is this garden, and what does it represent?
First and foremost, our garden is a sanctuary and a source of joy. It's a place we retreat to daily for comfort and renewal. It offers spaces for rest and reflection, and spaces to celebrate life with family and friends. Though it's situated in the urban core, our garden brings us closer to nature. This ground has been intentionally dedicated to beauty—not only for us, but for the entire community. Gardens are meant to be shared, and we enthusiastically share this one!
Our garden represents dedicated work, as well as a deep commitment to caring for our property, while contributing to the overall emotional tone of our neighborhood. It reflects our belief that small, thoughtful acts can elevate shared spaces. And it exhibits our dedication to nurturing the local ecosystem—one small plot at a time. The garden is a simple, loving gesture toward the birds, bees, butterflies and animals that are the lifeblood of our living environment. We hope that gestures like this become contagious throughout our extended community.
Lastly, our garden expresses our search for better health and balance. Gardening offers profound benefits: it reduces stress and anxiety, calms the mind and senses, and increases mindfulness and clarity. Working in the soil grounds us. Tending plants draws our attention to the present moment, serving as a restorative antidote to digital stress and constant technological stimulation. In many ways, this space has become our therapeutic sanctuary.
This garden is our offering—a living expression of care, stewardship, connection, and well-being. We are grateful to grow here, alongside all of you. Please enjoy!
Warmly,
Dear Neighbors & Friends:
There are limitless garden design styles one can adopt when creating an outdoor space. While this particular garden may not be for everyone, it's deeply intentional and purpose driven. Our garden leans toward a naturalistic style—lush, layered and expressive. At first glance, it may appear wild or spontaneous. In reality, every corner is thoughtfully curated to our liking. Each plant has been chosen with care, each space shaped with intention. The goal is not rigid symmetry or minimalism, but living abundance.
Located in the urban core of Newport, the garden serves as a biodiverse refuge. It is heavily layered with trees, shrubs, grasses, perennials, ground covers, bulbs, and seasonal plantings, and everything weaves together to create depth and movement. We strive to ensure that something is blooming every month of the year, offering continuous beauty as well as a steady source of nourishment for pollinators and wildlife. Water is intentionally incorporated to support birds and other creatures, reinforcing the garden’s role as a small but meaningful habitat. The sounds and movement of wildlife are as much a part of the design as the plants themselves.
Approximately 40% of our property is dedicated to public walks and the house footprint. The remaining 60% is devoted entirely to garden space. That proportion reflects our priorities: to maximize green space, cultivate biodiversity, and create a thriving ecosystem within an urban setting.
Our garden is layered, alive, and evolving—structured yet free, curated yet natural. It is designed not just to be seen, but to be experienced!
Our Garden Style
Beyond its design and structure, a garden is defined by how it's inhabited. It's a place to rest and relax, to sit quietly in the morning light, or unwind at the close of day. It is a place to celebrate life with friends and family, to gather around a table, to mark milestones, and to make lasting memories. Laughter has a home here, as much as stillness does.
The garden is also a place of movement and activity. We dig, plant, prune, and tend. Gardening itself is exercise, strengthening the body while engaging the senses. To feel the soil beneath our feet and in our hands is to reconnect with something elemental and grounding. In a world that often feels abstract and artificial, cultivation brings us back to what is tangible and real.
Garden space challenges our imagination and invites creativity. Each season presents new opportunities for expression through plant combinations, color palettes, structure, and display. The garden is both cultivation and art—an evolving canvas shaped by time, weather and intention.
It's also a place of learning. Through trial and error, observation, and research, we continue to educate ourselves about plants, soil health, biodiversity, and sustainable practices. The garden strengthens our commitment to environmental stewardship, and reminds us that sustainability begins at home.
Most importantly, the garden supports our mental and emotional well-being. It calms the mind, reduces stress, and fosters mindfulness. It encourages presence. It offers perspective. Whether through recreation, aesthetic enjoyment, education, or simply quiet reflection, the benefits ripple outward into every other part of our lives.
The garden is not merely something we maintain—it is something that sustains us.
Life Within the Garden
Gardening should be taken seriously but always in fun and without self importance or fear. Risks are worth taking, mistakes and failure are inevitable, and tomorrow offers another chance to do something new and better. – Christopher Lloyd
